Requesting public records

Most of what the district holds is already on this website — every set of board meeting minutes, and every public and legal notice. Please look there first; it is the fastest way to get what you need, and it costs nothing.

If what you are looking for is not here, you have a right to ask for it. Under New York's Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), anyone may request records held by the district. You do not have to give a reason, and you do not have to live in the district.

Who to ask

Debbie Priddle, District Secretary

How to ask

Put your request in writing — a letter, an email, or the form on this page. Describe what you are looking for as specifically as you can: a date, a meeting, a subject. A request does not have to name an exact document, but the more precisely you can describe it, the faster it can be found.

There is no charge to inspect records. If you ask for paper copies, the district may charge up to 25 cents a page.

How long it takes

The district will respond within five business days of receiving your request. If the records will take longer to gather, you will be told so within those five days and given a date by which you can expect them — no more than twenty business days.

If you are refused

If your request is denied, in whole or in part, you may appeal in writing within thirty days. Appeals are heard by the Board of Fire Commissioners, which will decide within ten business days of receiving the appeal and will explain its reasons in writing.
